SELF-PITY is a GATEWAY EMOTION. Feeling sorry for yourself opens the door to Self-Destructive behavior. For example, it is natural to feel lonely and rejected when you don’t get invited to a party. Your thoughts naturally turn inward saying things like, “See, this proves people don’t like me.” Once you start reinforcing untrue, negative beliefs about yourself, your brain now has justification to pursue coping behaviors that seem rewarding in the moment, but leave you feeling empty, and even more devalued then when you started down this path. Don’t allow negative experiences to determine your self-worth. Why punish yourself, for the sins of someone else.
Psalms 51:12 ESV: Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
