SHOULDS and SHOULD NOTS….the more of these you have, the Angrier you’ll be. When you say, “You Should exercise more,” or “You should not eat that,” you are trying to dictate change instead of suggesting it. People generally don’t like to be ordered around, and we typically don’t appreciate it when our commands of others go unheeded. Instead, try saying things like, “I would appreciate it if you helped out more around the house,” or “It would be nice if you ate healthier.” Until you are God, and can speak things into existence, using Shoulds and Should Nots will only frustrate you and others (Proverbs 10:31).
Proverbs 10:31 ESV: The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but the perverse tongue will be cut off.
