VESSEL V’s FUEL. Emotions such as Anger and Anxiety are often the simple Vessels we use to try and express a deeper, more complex set of feelings. For example, you could be grieving the loss of a loved one, and be feeling intense sorrow, fear, and shock. Yet, on the surface you might be displaying irritability and frustration. Or perhaps you are flying in an airplane for the first time and are feeling excited, curious, and scared, yet you express it physically as worry or anxiousness. While this may be a natural tendency, it prevents us from dealing with the deeper issues in our lives that are often fueling our negative coping behaviors. The next time you find yourself displaying anger or anxiety, ask yourself, “Is this an accurate emotional response, or is there something below the surface that’s motivating my reaction?” (Proverbs 20:5)
Proverbs 20:5 ESV: The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.
